New Delhi (PTI): Wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat met with former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday, fueling speculation that the star grapplers may be fielded as candidates by the party in the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections.
While the Congress has remained silent on whether Punia and Phogat will run, AICC general secretary in charge of Haryana, Deepak Babaria, indicated that clarity would emerge by Thursday. The party shared a photo of Gandhi with the wrestlers on its official X handle.
Punia and Phogat were prominent figures in the 2023 protests against former BJP MP and Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over sexual harassment allegations.
The Congress has finalized candidates for 66 of the 90 assembly seats, with the full list expected to be announced shortly. Haryana will vote on October 5, with results to be counted on October 8.
