Delhi: Supreme Court of India has mandated the Election Commission to organize elections in Jammu and Kashmir by September 2024. The court has concurrently affirmed the decision to establish Ladakh as a Union Territory (UT). However, the Supreme Court refrained from intervening in Jammu and Kashmir’s UT status, given the Centre’s assurance of promptly reinstating its statehood.
In response to mounting expectations, the Supreme Court has further issued an order for the restoration of statehood in Jammu and Kashmir. The decision has been widely lauded as excellent, signaling a pivotal moment in the region’s political trajectory and paving the way for renewed governance structures in the erstwhile state.
