Supreme Court refused to order the petition submitted by Tamil Nadu for release of Cauvery water

The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the order on Tamil Nadu’s plea that Karnataka should be directed to release 24,000 cusecs of Cauvery water every day.

The Supreme Court preferred to get a report from the Cauvery Water Management Authority on the amount of water released by Karnataka so far.

A three-judge bench headed by Justice BR Gavai heard the arguments of senior counsel Mukul Rohatgi for Tamil Nadu and Shyam Dewan for Karnataka. It is Tamil Nadu’s contention that the authority has issued an order but has not diverted water from Karnataka.

Karnataka has noted that the CWMA has released the stipulated water but it will take three days to reach Tamil Nadu.

“We do not know much about this matter,” the bench said.

Additional Solicitor General of the Centre Aishwarya Bhati said that the authority will hold a meeting on Monday to decide to release water for the next 15 days.

“The CWMA should submit its report on whether the directions issued for release of water have been followed or not, the report should be submitted to us by next Friday,” the bench said.

Karnataka has petitioned that the orders of the authorities are against the interest of Karnataka and therefore the amount of water allocated should be reduced.

In contrast, Tamil Nadu has applied for a larger share. In its order, the bench said that all these should be decided by the authorities and the case will be listed next Friday.

Karnataka has opposed in court Tamil Nadu’s plea that 24,000 cusecs of Cauvery water should be released per day.

On August 11, it decided to release 10,000 cusecs per day from August 12 to the next 15 days at Biligundlu, an inter-state border. Karnataka has asked the CWMA to review the decision.
