Tamil Nadu Rainfalls: Three Dead, Red Alert Issued in Four Districts

Heavy rains in Tamil Nadu has led to waterlogging, blockage on the roads and three deaths due to rain-related electrocutions have been reported on Thursday, as per NDTV.

Tamil Nadu’s revenue and disaster management minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, noting the deaths announced that a red alert has been issued in the districts of Chennai, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur, and Chengalpattu owing to severe downpours.

Red alert, which is one of the most severe of the colour-coded weather alerts, signifies that rainfall surpassing 20cm is expected in the concerned area over the next 24 hours. Amid heavy rains, schools, colleges and non-essential government offices in these districts will remain closed on Friday.

Due to cyclonic circulation off the coast, Tamil Nadu’s capital Chennai saw over 20cm of rainfall. As a result, the waterlogged roads brought traffic to a halt and severely disrupted commuters’ lives. On Thursday, Chennai’s metro rail services operated for an extra hour in order to assist the stranded commuters, with the last carriage leaving at midnight.

In a tweet, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) noted the amount of rainfall recorded in several districts in the state. Heavy rainfalls and thunderstorms are likely to continue for the next three days in North coastal Tamil Nadu and the adjoining areas of South coastal Andhra Pradesh, it added.

On Thursday, Tamil Nadu’s chief minister, M.K. Stalin visited the Greater Chennai Corporation’s flood control room to assess the situation and relief and rescue works underway in the state, according to reports from the Mint.
